Online transcription without installing Whisper
Start with an authorized audio/video upload or supported public link, then review timestamped text in LongScribe. A short no-account preview may be available, but downloading complete exports requires a signed-in account and an eligible completed job.
When local Whisper is the better choice
Choose local Whisper when audio cannot leave your device, you want an offline workflow or you already maintain Python/FFmpeg and adequate compute. A locally run model has no monthly SaaS minute cap, but it consumes your own resources.
When LongScribe is the better fit
Choose LongScribe when you want supported public URL transcription without manually downloading source media, a searchable browser transcript, background processing and prepared SRT/Word exports. Standard plan limits and the recording's accessibility still apply.
Free minutes are not unlimited recordings
The normal LongScribe Free plan includes 20 recordings and 60 total transcription minutes per month. Large recordings also have per-file and plan admission restrictions. Paid Premium is $4.99/month with 5,000 monthly minutes; it is not an unlimited plan.
Whisper accuracy versus a separate High Accuracy plan
LongScribe publishes a benchmark for its separately priced High Accuracy offering. That study does not establish the accuracy of the normal Free or Premium workflow and is not an independent test of every local Whisper version. Test your own recordings and review the transcript.
Check the original sources
OpenAI publishes the open-source Whisper repository, including setup and supported CLI output formats. Compare it with LongScribe pricing, long-recording limits and the separately described High Accuracy offering. A product comparison is not an accuracy guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Is LongScribe the same as OpenAI Whisper?
No. OpenAI Whisper is an open-source speech recognition model that you can run locally. LongScribe is a hosted transcription product with URL imports, transcript editing and export tools. Its recognition options are not a promise of identical outputs to a particular local Whisper installation.
Can I use Whisper without uploading private audio?
Yes. You can run the open-source Whisper model on your own computer after installing the required software and models. A hosted service such as LongScribe receives the authorized recording for processing instead.
How much transcription is free in LongScribe?
The normal Free plan includes 20 recordings and 60 minutes per month. Direct file uploads on Free are limited to 90 MB; Premium supports larger chunked uploads up to 1 GB. Plan minutes are not a guarantee that every long recording can be accepted.
Do I need to install Python or a GPU?
Not for LongScribe. Running the open-source Whisper implementation locally requires software setup including Python and FFmpeg; actual speed depends on your hardware.
Which transcript files can I download?
For an eligible completed LongScribe job, signed-in users can download TXT, DOCX, JSON and timed SRT/VTT files. Local Whisper has its own command-line output formats and does not create a Word document without an additional conversion step.
Is an online Whisper alternative more accurate?
Not automatically. Model, audio quality, language, noise and speaker overlap all matter. Do not apply a separate High Accuracy benchmark to the ordinary hosted or local Whisper workflow without testing the same recordings.
